Petroleum Exploration and Development was started in 1974. Its purposes are to disseminate and communicate the up-to-date science and technology of petroleum; and to cover the latest theoretical and technological developments and research results in China and across the world relating to petroleum geology, oil and gas field development, petroleum engineering, new energy, CCUS , etc. The columns in the journal include: Petroleum Exploration; Oil and Gas Field Development; Petroleum Engineering; Carbon Neutrality, New Energy and Emerging Field, etc.
Petroleum Exploration and Development is indexed and abstracted in Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI), Engineering Index (EI), Petroleum Abstracts (PA), SCOPUS, CSCD, GEO-REF, INSPEC, and other databases.
In the 2023 Journal Citation Reports (JCR), the Impact Factor of Petroleum Exploration and Development is 7.2, which is ranked first among all the SCI journals in the category of Petroleum Engineering and ranked in Q1 area in the categories of Petroleum Engineering, Energy & Fuels, and Geosciences.
Petroleum Exploration and Development are awarded the "Nomination Award of the China Government Journal Award" twice in 2013 and 2021. The journal has been awarded “Certificate of 100 Outstanding Academic Journals of China” for 21 years in row. It has been awarded “Internationally Most Influential Academic Journal of China” for 12 years consecutively.
Petroleum Exploration and Development is published worldwide in both Chinese and English.
