On July 31, 2013, Thomson Reuters informed that the journal of Petroleum Exploration and Development has been selected into and will be indexed in the database of Science Citation Index (SCI) Expanded. The coverage will begin with Vol. 39(1) 2012.
SCI is an English acronym for the American “Science Citation Index” database, which was founded in 1961. As an international index, SCI includes natural science, biology, medicine, agriculture, technology, and behavioral science, etc., with a focus on fundamental science. Publications selected come from 94 categories published in over 50 languages in more than 40 countries, primarily including the USA, UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Russia, France, Japan, and Canada, etc. A number of Chinese magazines are also indexed in the database. As the world’s most renowned three major scientific literature retrieval systems, SCI (Science Citation Index), EI (Engineering Index) and ISTP (Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings) are the globally recognized primary retrieval tools for scientific statistics and scientific evaluation, wherein SCI is the most important. Petroleum Exploration and Development is the only academic energy journal ofChinathat is simultaneously covered by SCI and EI. It is also one of the 33 academic journals acrossChinasimultaneously covered by SCI and EI.
During selection of journals, SCI comprehensively evaluates the academic value of each journal using the method combining scientific citation data analysis and worldwide peer expert evaluations. Its basic standard is that the journal has to be a global or regional representative and has to be internationalized. So far, more than 9,000 journals worldwide are covered, including over 5,000 journals in its natural science database. Representing journals of important influence in the world, the over 800,000 technical papers indexed in it demonstrates a collection of important research findings of each discipline. SCI has gradually become a globally recognized tool that reflects level of research in fundamental disciplines. Therefore, the academia in most countries and regions around the world regards the number of scientific papers covered by SCI as the most important indicator regarding the level of research in fundamental disciplines of a nation and its scientific strength. Whether the journal in which a scientific worker publishes his or her paper is included by SCI and the journal’s impact factor will determine the degree of evaluation on his or her research findings. As the economy globalizes, scientific research is also becoming increasingly globalized. SCI papers provide an important means of conducting international scientific exchange and a major channel for international colleagues to understandChina’s science and technology. Publishing SCI-covered technical papers can demonstrateChina’s strength in fundamental research to the world and is therefore very important to enhancingChina’s position in the world’s scientific community.
Great effort has been made to improve the academic level and international influence of the journal of Petroleum Exploration and Development. The Editorial Board has developed a detailed reporting direction and proposal selection plan for this journal at the beginning of each year according to strict paper examination procedures defined. Our staff members closely keep up with the frontiers of scientific development, closely track the progress of major petroleum scientific research projects, participate in major academic conferences, and invite submissions by visiting reputed scientists. We ensure the timeliness of release of technical innovations and allow our journal to always lead in technological advances by publishing on a timely basis some major achievement technical papers such as Exploration and Development of Shale Gas, Geological Evaluation and Development Technique for Exploration of Tight Oil and Gas, Exploration and Development of Carbonate Oil and Gas, Exploration and Development of Coalbed Methane, Tertiary Oil Recovery Techniques in Mature Oil Fields, Horizontal Well Staged Fracturing to Improve Reservoirs, Reservoir Description and Potential Enhancement for High Water-Cut Oil Fields, Heavy Oil Production, etc. The quality of technical papers published is guaranteed by strictly following the four steps of paper acceptance, i.e. preliminary review by the chief editor, expert review, collective review by the Editorial Board, and approval by the senior leadership.
Petroleum Exploration and Development was ranked second and third, respectively, among China’s core scientific journals in 2010 and 2011 in terms of the impact factor, has been ranked first place among energy scientific journals for 6 years in a row, and won the “100 Outstanding Academic Journals of China” award nine times. Three of its papers have been awarded the “100 Most Influencing Domestic Academic Papers of China” in 2009, 2010 and 2011, respectively. It was selected as the “Highest International Impact Academic Journals of China” in 2012. The journal has been selected into “Quality Scientific Journals of China” sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China in 2008 and 2011 in a row. Twenty-two technical papers published in the journal won the “Forerunners 5000 (F5000)—Top Papers in Quality Scientific Journals of China” nomination among the 5,000 research papers representing China’s highest academic level chosen by the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China (ISTIC) from all papers published in Quality Scientific Journals of China during 2007-2012 and are now being in the process of announcement. Wuhan University’s Research Center for China Science Evaluation (RCCSE) announced the result of evaluation of Chinese academic journals, Petroleum Exploration and Development has been achieved the highest evaluation level (A+) for Chinese academic journals and awarded “Authoritative Academic Journal of China”.
Petroleum Exploration and Development is simultaneously distributed worldwide in both Chinese and English. Technical papers submitted by foreign authors are translated into Chinese and published in our Chinese version journal. Our English version journal is distributed worldwide on the ScienceDirect platform (www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/18763804) of Elsevier ? the world’s largest publisher. The global requests for the technical papers of the English version journal have reached 23,019 in 2012. Readers of the journal are from 83 countries and regions, including major oil producing countries like the USA, UK, Russia, Iran, France, Malaysia, Australia, and Brazil, etc. The academic impact of Petroleum Exploration and Development is increasing in the world. Submissions by foreign scholars are increasing each year. Authors are attracting broad attentions from overseas. International academic organizations are inviting authors publishing papers in the journal to attend international academic conferences. Relevant research institutes and universities invite them to conduct scientific cooperation and recommend their published papers to compete for international academic awards. Many young people in foreign countries are applying for study as their graduate students after reading their papers.
